Biography

Originally from Miami, Florida, Arturo Fernandez is a neoromantic composer based in the Boston area. He has degrees in composition from the Boston Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

As an active composer of song, orchestral music, chamber music, and chamber opera, he has premiered several projects with Art Song Lab in Vancouver, BC., the Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs, Heartland Marimba in the Midwest, the Shakespeare Concerts in Boston, Hypercube in New York, and for Dutch thereminist Thorwald Jorgensen. Arturo hopes to expand into writing full-length operas.

In addition to composing, Arturo is a busy performer; he is an evolving Thereminist who has performed as a guest artist with the Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, and is yearning to become a more frequent recitalist on the instrument. He is an accomplished violist with Trio Menagerie, as well as the Trio’s main arranger and composer. He plays the viola with the New England Philharmonic, the Boston Civic Symphony and The Beacon Ensemble. Additionally he is an opera critic for the blog Schmopera in the Boston area.
